Uncle Kentang warns young woman off likely ‘real estate job’ scam

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — An offer too good to be true? That might have been the case for a young woman from Kedah who came to Kuala Lumpur for a property agent job offering RM3,500 as starting pay.

Influencer Chee Heng Kuan or more known as Uncle Kentang said the woman had contacted him to ask for financial assistance.

She had taken a bus all the way from Kedah to take the job.

After seeing the conversations she had with her purported employer, Chee, feeling suspicious told her not to go to the meeting, at least not alone.

He shared details of his meetup with the woman in a Facebook post, stating: “I told her to cancel the meetup. She is plain lucky to ask me for some money. And I ask her plan. At first I agreed. But after looking into the conversations they had and profile of that new employer, I believe it is extremely risky for her to meet her alone.”

In the end, Chee said another woman had offered the youngster an alternate job with accommodation.

For the meantime, he put up the young woman at a hotel and cautioned youngsters to be more careful about job offers.

“Youngsters do not get excited for a new employment. You might be a victim of scam,” Chee said.

In comments on the post, Malaysians noted that real estate agents generally are not paid salaries and are only paid in commission.

Employment scams have become more common of late so it is important that jobseekers be careful to do their due diligence, lest they end up being trapped in dangerous situations.
