Johor to send athlete to represent country in Summer Olympics

JOHOR BARU: The year 2024 will be an important sporting year for Johor as one of its athletes will be representing Malaysia in the Summer Olympics.

State youth, sports, entrepreneur development, and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said there would be many prestigious sporting events in which Johor athletes will be taking part in the sporting event.

“One of the competitions is the Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris between July 26 and August 11.

“Among the Malaysian athletes that will compete in Paris is our very own track cyclist Mohd Shah Firdaus. Hopefully, he can do his utmost best and make us proud,” he added.

Mohd Hairi said this in his speech during the 30th Johor Sports Award held at Persada International Convention Centre here on Wednesday (Feb 28) night.

The Larkin assemblyman added that besides the Olympics, the Johor contingent would be participating in the Malaysia Games (Sukma), which would be held in Sarawak between August 17 and August 24.

He said in the last Sukma, Johor emerged as overall champions for the first time in 36 years after bagging 77 gold, 52 silver and 44 bronze medals.

“With 171 days left before Sukma Sarawak, I expect the state sports council, coaches, associations and athletes will use all the time given for practice and make a name for themselves,” he added.
